Apple is making significant changes to its product lineup in Europe, as it prepares to comply with the European Union’s (EU) upcoming common charger regulations. According to recent reports, the tech giant has already stopped listing the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE (2022) for purchase on its website in Switzerland. The discontinuation extends beyond Switzerland to the 27 countries of the EU, as well as regions within the European single market.
Discontinued Models and the Lightning Port
The affected models — iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE (2022) — were introduced in 2022 and are equipped with Apple’s proprietary Lightning port. This charging standard has now been replaced by the universal USB Type-C port in newer Apple devices, including the iPhone 15 series. The move is a clear step towards aligning with the EU’s common charger mandate, which comes into effect on December 28, 2024.
The regulation aims to simplify charging solutions and reduce electronic waste by mandating USB Type-C as the standard charging port for most electronic devices sold in the EU. Apple’s compliance strategy appears to include discontinuing the sale of smartphones equipped with the Lightning port in the region.
While Switzerland is not an EU or European Economic Area (EEA) member, it participates in the European single market alongside Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. As a result, Apple’s decision to halt online sales of the affected models in Switzerland is seen as part of a broader strategy to comply with the new regulations across Europe. Customers in these regions can still purchase these models in physical stores until the December 28 deadline, but availability will cease thereafter.
Even after Apple officially discontinues these models, third-party resellers will likely continue selling remaining units. However, such sales are expected to dwindle as supplies run out. This marks the end of an era for Apple’s Lightning-equipped devices in the EU, while also creating a transitional period for consumers still using these products.
Future Prospects: The iPhone SE (4th Gen)
Apple’s decision to discontinue the third-generation iPhone SE doesn’t mean the end of the SE lineup. Reports suggest the company is actively developing a fourth-generation iPhone SE, which could launch in the near future. Expected features include an updated design, the introduction of Face ID, and potentially Apple’s in-house modem chip.
